Personal message

SHEveresting has partnered with Khaltsha Cycles and hopes to raise funds to donate 9 bicycles to represent the almost 9000m we will be climbing during our Everesting attempt, as well as a ‘cycling starter kit’ (including a helmet, spare tubes, and a Learn2Cycle and Basic Mechanics class) to disadvantaged women entering the sport.

Women are a minority in the cycling world and the initial barrier to entry is expensive, so we hope to give more women the opportunity to own a bicycle and reap the sporting, social and potential financial benefits that come with this special sport.

Created while discussing the latest Everesting trend during Lockdown, a group of South African female cyclists came up with the SHEveresting Challenge: an opportunity for female/ non-binary cyclists to push their bodies to the limit by attempting a full or half Everesting (climbing 8848m of vertical gain by doing laps of a single climb).

With the huge interest the event has already attracted in the female riding community, we realised that this was not only an opportunity to test our limits but also to give back.

Our goal is not only to achieve our colossal climbing challenge and empower women entering the sport by providing them with their first bicycle, but it is also to attract more women to the wonderful sport that is cycling. We hope to begin the process of changing the present stereotype of cycling being a male dominant sport here in South Africa, to one in which it is inclusive and enjoyed by all.

The funds will be used to purchase 9 bicycles (to start), helmets, spares and accessories. This includes a Learn2Cycle class and a Basic Mechanics class.

1 x 21 Speed Avalanche mountain bike (bravo)
1 x Helmet
2 x Tubes
1 x Patch kit
1 x handpump
1 x saddle bag
1 x Combo lights
1 x Bike lock (ABC Combination)
2 x Classes (1x Learn2Cycle & 1x Basic Mechanics)

The campaign will start on Women's Day - 9th August, and will end after the SHEveresting challenge has been completed. We hope to potentially continue fundraising for bicycles for women past this date.
