One in every thousand babies born has a hearing disability. Further to this, many more develop hearing loss as a result of various reasons later in life. Advances in modern technology provide us with a very modern day solution - cochlear implants.

On the 20th of March 2011 we will set off from Cape Town, on our biycles, on a journey that will take us through eight months, ten countries, and 12,500 kilometres, leading to our destination – Cairo. We will raise funds to make a difference to the lives of Deaf South Africans. We aim to raise as much as possible for the HearUs Foundation, a charity that helps bring the right of hearing to those who do not yet have it – achieved via cochlear implants.

We are three friends, ordinary South Africans, who want to do extraordinary things.

Hear Us Foundation

A Cochlear implant is a bionic ear which enables deaf people to hear. These are miraculous devices, which give a lifelong gift of hearing. During 2001 Hear Us was established by parents of deaf children who have had cochlear implants (bionic ears). They wanted to financially assist children and adults who were also candidates for cochlear implants. Most individuals are unable to afford the costs of implantation. Hear Us has two aims - fundraising to assist candidates, and to support the staff of the Cochlear Implant Unit at Tygerberg Hospital who receive very little state funding.
