Personal message

The Space of Good Hope Design Research Studio, School of Architecture, UCT has been invited to participate and exhibit it’s work at the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, Global Studio: Informal Aggregation. We, the Space of Good Hope 2019 project team, need your financial assistance to travel and participate in the Biennale which is taking place in Seoul, South Korea (www.seoulbiennale.org/2019).

We feel honoured to have been selected to exhibit at this year’s Biennale and look forward to showcasing our research to an international audience. The research has focused on Delft South, the first post-apartheid neighbourhood area of Cape Town. We have found that, as a case study, it tells us a lot about the new democratic South African city. We feel that we have a significant contribution to make as we are 1 of 40 schools of architecture in the world, and the only school from the African continent, that will be represented at the Biennale. Our participation will expand our opportunity to engage and learn.

We - this year’s five architectural honours students, one master's student and two alumni of the studio - have curated an in-depth snapshot of our understanding of the area, coupled with selected student architectural design propositions. We hope to spark fruitful engagements with other students and attendees concerning the themes that the studio has explored. This will, undoubtedly, be an invaluable experience for us, which we will definitely share on our return.

We are appealing for financial assistance in order to make it possible for the project team to travel to Seoul and actively participate at the Biennale.

The Studio has been running for the past four years. Over this period we have uncovered and documented a rich body of knowledge of Delft South, explicitly engaging with the transformation of the urban every day in the contemporary South African city.

We feel it would be an invaluable experience for us to relay our knowledge as well as to engage with students and professionals from all over the world.

We aim to have raised the bulk of our donations by the time we depart for the Biennale. The Biennale opens on the 7th September, however, we aim to arrive there on the 1st of September in order to set up part of the exhibition work that we are taking with us.

We have estimated the costs to be R18 000 per student. This will cover return flights and accommodation for 9 nights.
