Street Surfers

Personal message

My name is Frank Solomon and I met Thabo and Mokete during the making of our film Street surfers.  I am a big wave surfer and marine activist from Cape Town South Africa, and I travelled to meet two exceptional men, Thabo and Mokete, who indirectly serve the environment through recycling as a means of income.

I hope to raise some funds for Thabo and Mokete as they are doing such incredible work for our environment yet live in abject poverty. For many like Thabo and Mokete, becoming a street surfer was a decision born from necessity. With cold nights spent sleeping on the streets and exhausting long-distance walks across the city each day, it’s easy to understand why this work would be one of the last resorts. Despite the role they play in recycling city waste, street surfers are seen as a nuisance. While their services should be celebrated, the lives of Johannesburg’sstreet surfers are an uphill struggle.

I hope that with the money we can raise for them they will be able to live a better life and be role models for the community that they live in. When I last saw them I asked how I could help and they said they need help with life:(

With this campaign, I hope to assist the gentleman as much as I can with food, clothes and their living expenses for as long as possible.

Funds raised will be used to help provide  Thabo and Mokete with a “surfer’s pack” that will include:

1) Two pairs of hardcore boots (We will look for good working boots, something that will be super comfortable for them to do their job in).

2) Clothing for the elements (a few pairs of overalls, wet weather gear and jackets)

3) Two pairs of gloves

3) Monthly food vouchers

Additional funds will be used to purchase additional food vouchers.

If any companies would like to sponsor any of the above items please do contact me directly via email: [email protected]

The guys do not have bank accounts so funds raised will be transferred to Non-profit organisation, The Sentinel Ocean Alliance where funds will be managed to fulfill the needs stipulated above.
