Project Playground (PPG) is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2010. The organization operates in two townships outside of Cape Town: Langa and Gugulethu. PPG provides a safe place for children within the townships to participate in structured play and learning. Most of Project Playground's participants live in severe poverty with absent support systems, and many are subject to domestic violence, rape and drug abuse. With a total of almost 800 youths, ranging in age from 4 to 21, PPG offers these youths opportunities in soccer, netball, drama, art, music, dance and developmental learning. Additionally, PPG extends its services to providing meals and psychological support, conducting home visits so as to build the full picture of what each individual child needs. Project Playground uses these activities as a means of getting the children to join and it is then that the works starts with a focus on each individual child, building their self esteem and placing a very strong emphasis on education as a means to a brighter future. PPG launched "Play on Wheels" in 2012 which focuses on helping children and youth with disabilities. PPG is a sense of "hope" for the future of a world without townships. Every South African township needs a Project Playground.$30 - can fund a month of art supplies for our art division (this creative outlet allows our kids to flourish and develop strong self esteem through the power of art) $40 - can allow 5 children to go an excursion outside of the townships for a day (for some, this will be the very first time they have ever left the confines of the townships) $50 - can feed a child at Project Playground for a whole year (for some, this is the only meal they receive all day) $50 - is the cost per month to provide one child (able bodied) with a daily after school activity, feed them and provide them with social work support $75 - can provide a psychological assessment and therapy for one child (sadly a prevalent and escalating problem in the townships) $800 - is the cost per month to provide a disabled child with daily care at Project Playground, physical therapy and food (they would otherwise be hidden from society as they are treated like they are the work of witchcraft within their communities)
Our partnership with Student-Athletes abroad has opened these doors for us and we are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and involvement in Project Playground. Student-Athletes Abroad is an international education program designed to remove barriers that prevent student-athletes from studying or interning abroad while using sports as a vehicle to increase cultural immersion and maximize educational opportunities. By partnering with PPG, together we provide students with a life changing experience. See South Africa through the eyes of our children at Project Playground.
