Sue and Bogart Salute Whistleblowers

Sue and Bogart Salute Whistleblowers

Personal message

“Everything Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did backwards and in high heels.”

From Watergate to the #GuptaLeaks, we have seen the power of well-organized investigative journalism leading to the demise of both an American and South African President. Whistleblowers were central in both cases as corruption is a victimless crime.

Investigative journalism around the #GuptaLeaks/State Capture required two courageous whistleblowers, trusting The Daily Maverick enough, to come forward, at huge risk and cost to themselves. They faced serious financial implications as well as physical threats to their and their families lives.

The Daily Maverick paid all their relocation costs out of the country.  A fund housed within a Public Benefit Organisation has been set up to take care of future whistleblowers.  Funds will be used to pay for their legal, relocation and safety costs.

The Zondo and Nugent Commissions of Enquiry and others, resulting from the #GuptaLeaks into State Capture, bear testimony to the marginalization of whistleblowers, their pain and the physical and financial cost to themselves.

I pay tribute to and salute all whistleblowers. On the 2 March 2019 I climbed the Westcliff steps in my red high heels with Humphrey Bogart, my Standard Poodle, accompanied by a superb and fun group of friends.

A very special thank you to friends, family and colleagues who so generously supported my walk up the stairs. You are the true heroes.  Thank you so much for supporting the Daily Maverick’s Whistleblower Programme. We are thrilled and touched by your vote of confidence and support.

To all those who are thinking of contributing or who have missed or forgotten my emails, please could you help us raise an additional R10,000.00 by clicking here.
