Support for Sunè Sinclair

Personal message

Sunè Sinclair, a family member, is a lovely, bright 20 year old young woman who is known by many as being a friendly, high spirited and hard working person who is always willing to help others.  Sunè lives in the Mpumalanga town of Ermelo with her Mom, Amanda and Dad, Dennis.  She loves farm-life, has a passion for wildlife preservation, game, is a keen hunter and firearm instructor.

Sunè has been struck down at a very young age and reliant on the support of her parents, family and friends.

On 16 May 2019, while helping a friend harvest soya crops around 20km out of town, a freak nightmarish accident occurred.

Sunè stepped out of the combine harvester cab to clean the dust off the windscreen.  There was a sudden jerk and Sunè lost her balance and fell backwards into the razor sharp harvester blades.

The back of Sunè’s legs, her hamstrings, were severely cut, right down to the bone and she sustained injuries to her back, neck and shoulders.  It was a miracle that Sunè was not hurt even worse or that she did not bleed to death at the scene.

The family owe heartfelt thanks to friend Dawie Swanepoel, a friend who raced Sunè into town in a bakkie, Hannes Nagel of ER24 for all his assistance, and all the bystanders involved who had saved their daughter’s life.

Sunè was transferred from Ermelo to Newcastle Mediclinic where she underwent surgery to clean and stitch up the wounds.  Doctors were satisfied, the prognosis looked good and soon Sunè was up and the physio helped her to start walking with crutches.  She was strong and defiant in the face of this massive injury, determined to overcome and heal completely.

Sadly, in the weeks that passed she has suffered a huge set back.   Sunè's wounds had not healed as well as expected, infection set in and she was in unbearable pain.  The surgeons at the Newcastle Mediclinic operated again on Tuesday 4th June 2019 and a few days after Sunè was transferred by ambulance back to her parents' home in Ermelo on Friday 7th June 2019. Sunè turned 20 the following day.

Following the surgery Sunè is confined to bed most of the time.  She has to have special machines on both of her legs named VAC (Vacuum-assisted closure of a wound is a type of therapy to help wounds heal).  These have to be on her legs during the day and night and a specialist wound care nursing sister has to clean and dress the wound care every two days.  It is extremely painful and Sunè needs to be sedated in order to get through the wound cleaning.

If in time Sunè’s doctor is happy with the wound healing process a green light will be given to start physiotherapy to learn to walk again.

It is believed that there will be at least a year’s worth of physiotherapy ahead and the reality that there are many rehab sessions and doctors’ visits to come in this time.  Parents Amanda and Dennis Sinclair have exhausted their medical aid and any savings over the last few weeks and there is still a very long road ahead.

The costs for this little family have been exorbitant and they are nowhere near living life as it was before.  Sunè is not able to work for the foreseeable future and is completely reliant on her Mom and Dad for care.
