Support Our Homeless #coronavirussa

Personal message

As our country grapples with the growing number of confirmed cases of people infected with the Covid-19 virus everyday, MES is faced with the challenge of operating and delivering services to the homeless and vulnerable communities based in Hillbrow, Kempton Park, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.  MES faces the real challenge of providing very basic survival needs (food, shelter, protection from weather)  to these communities whilst taking into considerations the spread of Covid-19.  Most of the people we serve have little or no access to sanitation products and the probability of the virus spreading amongst our shelters and other programmes is a serious concern.

Our call to action to fellow South African citizens is to support MES with the necessary products and finances to ensure we can combat the virus in our inner-city streets.

We provide access to hygienic and affordable accommodation at our overnight shelters with toilet and shower facilities where spacing will be monitored.
Providing safe beds to 400 people between 3 cities. We provide clean bedding every night, access to soap for showering, soap to wash clothing items on a daily basis.

We will be offering:

  • Health screening to everyone making use of the shelter facilities with referral protocol in place, refering cases of concern to health authorities and assisting with contact tracing should the person referred tests positive.
  • We will also provide healthy meals to increase immunity.
  • We will identify isolation placements for those in need, to minimise risk for the most vulnerable.
  • Increased hygiene solutions for the destitute.

Below is a list of our most pressing needs per programme. Items and funds will be directed to where they are most needed.

MES Mould Empower Serve NPC

MES Mould Empower Serve NPC Logo

MES is a Christian integrated social development organisation that has been changing the heart of the city since 1986 and has been actively working towards providing sustainable solutions to pervasive poverty in the inner cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Kempton Park in South Africa.

The initial vision for MES was born in 1986 when the Johannesburg East Dutch Reformed Church started with an outreach programme that handed out food parcels to the homeless and unemployed community of Hillbrow in Johannesburg inner city. In 1989 the project registered as a Section 21 company with an independent Board of Directors.

Currently, the organisation is a registered Not for Profit Company, NPO, Public Benefit Organisation and has Section 18 A (tax benefit) status for South-African donors. MES focuses on pre-schoolers, learners, youth and adults.

Our vision is to Change the Heart of the city! MES aims to empower people holistically to live independent, sustainable and meaningful lives.
