“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela.
Tayla and Pierre have chosen, for Mandela Day this year, to swim 670 laps as a means to raise money for bursaries to keep our learners in school. Both of our swimmers are truly inspiring individuals with incredible hearts to serve. Pierre represented South Africa at the Deaflympics in both 2017 and 2019.
He was one of only two male swimmers at the 2019 Deaflympics and won a bronze medal in the 50m men’s freestyle for South Africa. He also broke the Africa men’s 50m disability record. He has had an incredible sporting career and we are so excited to have him swimming on behalf of our learners.
Tayla is one of our Combined School teachers with a passion for both education and swimming. She is so invested in bettering the lives of our learners and is such an energetic presence within our school.
“I am embarking on this journey for my students, many of whom have disabilities and barriers to learning. These individuals inspire me daily and have so much to offer the world, even if it feels to them as if the larger world does not have their back. They are in a community that certainly does and I will never stop working tirelessly for these students, to ensure they feel this support.”
Many of the learners at Sparrow come from incredibly disadvantaged backgrounds which meant that when the pandemic struck in 2020 they were some of the hardest hit.
Many of their parents or guardians lost their jobs and could no longer afford their school fees. In response to this Sparrow created a bursary fund which raised more money for bursaries than ever before. In a world still so gripped by the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic we need to ensure that our learners can stay in school and receive the quality education they deserve. For many of these learners, Sparrow is more than just an education.
It is a support system for development and growth, and in some cases is even where they get their primary meals. Due to learners at our schools being special needs, they also require specialised education and so it is vital we provide them with equipment to better their learning experience. Our learners rely so much on us, it is therefore vital we do not let them down in such a difficult time.
The majority of the funds raised from this campaign will go towards bursaries to keep our learners in school. A portion will also go towards new desks and other teaching equipment, to improve their learning experience.
