Help Us Get OY!Theatre to the National Arts Festival in June 2022

Personal message

OY! Theatre (Obs Youth Theatre), is a performance-based neighbourhood theatre company for young people between the ages of 13 and 18 years, based in Observatory, Cape Town.  Culturally and economically diverse, the young company meets weekly on Monday and Friday evenings.

Run by a dynamic group of professional theatre makers, OY!Theatre is a place of deep experiential learning that not only gives our young people an opportunity to engage with all aspects of performance but also creates an important space for young people from vastly different circumstances to engage and learn from each other.

Since 2018 when the company began in order to meet the needs of 2 young people who found themselves having to leave formal schooling early,  OY! Theatre has presented:

DNA, written by Dennis Kelly and directed by Jaqueline Dommisse

OY's Line is it Anyway, an improvisation performance facilitated by Megan Choritz

Through Our Eyes, created with the company and directed by Thando Doni

Holloway Jones, written by Evan Placey and directed by Thembela Madliki

Tusk, created with the company and directed by Rosa-Karoo Loewe

Love and Information, written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Jaqueline Dommisse and Caroline Calburn

The Children's Monologues, created by Dramatic Need and directed by Lesego Chauke.

Theatre Arts would like to take the young company of OY! Theatre to the National Arts Festival in Makhanda in June this year.  After 2 years of a pandemic in which the young people really struggled with the isolation, in 2021 we brought them back into the rehearsal room under strict covid protocols.

In that year, they created two incredible productions – Love and Information and The Children’s Monologues.  The work that they did in both these productions was astonishing and we saw them gradually come back into their old selves.

This year we would love to repeat the trip that the company made in 2019 when they took Through Our Eyes, directed by the Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre 2021 – Thando Doni – to the festival. Their trip was seminal in so many ways.

They watched so much theatre, engaged with artists, and performed to really appreciative audiences. They learnt what it means to tour a production, to work and live together as a company, to be responsible for each other, to perform in often extremely difficult circumstances and to aspire as artists at a festival.

This year, we would love to take The Children’s Monologues to the festival.   We noted how much the audience – both young people and adults – enjoyed the performance last year in October, and feel it is a wonderful production for the fringe.

Getting to the festival is a costly affair – transport, accommodation and food for 8 days, as well as tickets to see other performances and participate in the festival amounts to approximately R60 000.  Whilst the young people are involved in a variety of fundraising activities, we have a significant hole in the budget which we were wondering if you would be able to help us fill.  The overall costs are:

  1. Food for the company of 15  (cast of 12 and artistic and pastoral support team of 3) -  R150/day for 8 days – R18 000.
  2. Accommodation – 15 people at R200/night for 6 nights – R18 000.
  3. Transport – either bus tickets (15 x R1300), or van rental – R19 500.
  4. Tickets for Shows – 5 tickets per person @ R80/ticket – R6000.
  5. NAF Registration fee – R500.
  6. Poster & flyer printing (200 posters @ R10/poster) – R2000.

The young people are terribly excited about going – for many teens, a visit to the festival can be a life-changing experience, particularly when their visit is as artists.  They are very keen to share their work with a wider audience.

We would so appreciate your support.  Any amount helps.

Built on the tenets of affordability, inclusivity and accessibility, Theatre Arts is a vibrant home for local theatre practitioners – a place where they can create work, develop skills, perform, engage in dialogue and meet and work with theatre practitioners who come from diverse backgrounds, whether cultural, social, and economic or simply in skill and experience.  Described as the rehearsal space of choice, Theatre Arts is dedicated to creating the right environment for artists and theatre to flourish.

In an industry that is culturally divided, dominated by a few voices and vastly under-supported financially, both through patronage and funding, Theatre Arts strives to support, enable and provide opportunities for artists to continue developing skills, creating work and generating income.  Open to fresh ideas and up for experimentation based on current trends in economic thinking, Theatre Arts is an organic model and successful training ground for re-conceptualising what a theatre institution, in South Africa, can be and how it can sustain itself.
