The long walk project

Personal message

The Long Walk Project is aimed at making contact with present and future entrepreneurs and raising awareness of the importance of “making it work” and adapting a changed, entrepreneurial mindset.

The CEO of StreetBiz Foundation, Dr Nico de Klerk, is currently walking across South Africa within a period of just longer than four months. The journey started at the statue of Nelson Mandela on Mandela Day (18 July 2018) and will end at the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town on South African Day (24 November 2018).

During this journey of more than 2 750 km (1 708 miles), Nico will visit more than a hundred local communities where he will meet with schools, community leaders and other interested parties. He is talking to “the man on the street”, hosting workshops and delivering presentations.

After the Long Walk Project, StreetBiz will collaborate with contacts made during the Long Walk Project, as well as sponsors and partners, in further establishing our online platform where entrepreneurs will be able to upskill and find valuable resources and training.

More information about the Long Walk Project [detail]

The aim of the Long Walk Project is to create awareness regarding the importance of the development of an entrepreneurial mindset. The focus of the project is the youth and unemployed South Africans in economically disadvantaged communities (EDCs), which can be estimated at nearly 30% (17 million) of the total population of South Africa.

To achieve this, the CEO of the StreetBiz Foundation, Dr Nico de Klerk, is currently walking from Pretoria to Cape Town.

He is visiting 100 communities in commemoration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy and 100th birthday celebrations. During these visits to the 100 communities, he is hosting workshops where the youth, unemployed and interested parties learn to identify the traits of an entrepreneur and participate in Knack cellphone games. Meetings are set up continuously with local communities and spiritual leaders in order to establish StreetBiz at local level.

The long-term vision of StreetBiz is the establishment of an online academy with an emphasis on the mindset of the youth and unemployed, and providing them with basic business skills. The Long Walk Project is a symbolic act aimed at creating awareness of the unexplored potential for entrepreneurship in South Africa.

During the Long Walk Project, research is also done regarding the entrepreneurial mindset. This is supported by the SocioNovus programme of Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with various international institutions. Partnerships have been established with SEDA (Small Enterprise Development Agency), the South Africa Day Initiative, Stellenbosch University’s SocioNovus programme, Knack, and various others. StreetBiz is a non-profit company.
