We are Heike Rusch & Carol Petersen, aged 37 & 43 respectively. We live in Johannesburg and both work in the travel industry. We have a love for the outdoors and a passion for animals, especially horses. We are avid Endurance Horse riders.
The Mongol Derby is a 1000km Race across the Mogolian Steppe on horse back. The worlds longest horse race. This is completed over 8 days which equates to +/- 160kms a day. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity as only 44 riders are accepted from the hundreds that apply. Both Carol & I have gone through a vigorous interview process and have been accepted as one of the fortunate few to compete in this race. As the only South Africans to compete in the August 2020 Derby we now need to raise the funds to allow us to represent our country.
We would need the funds by October 2019
The funds will be used to pay for the race and transport to the event.
The race entry consists of the following:
1. THE RACE
The world’s longest horse race and the toughest equestrian event on the planet.
2. THE HORSES
25 race horses, three training horses and a number of spares in case of the unexpected.
Around 250 Mongolian herders to prepare and deliver the above horses, herd them in to order and keep them grazed and watered during the race.
4. HORSE STATIONS
29 Mongolian families to feed us, water us, and protect us from the cold at night.
A specialist medical response team on call for emergencies.
6. EQUINE VETS
International & local equine vets to ensure the welfare of the horses and administer the vet inspections at each horse station.
7. RACE CREW
Race management crew to ensure the smooth running of the race for all riders including the Ulaanbaatar operations room and UK team at The Adventurists HQ in the UK.
8. PRE-RACE TRAINING
One day of technical training and rule explanation in Ulaanbaatar and two days of horsemanship & navigation training on the steppe, with invaluable advice from the medics, vets and race crew.
9. DRIVERS & INTERPRETERS
A team of drivers and their vehicles to transport us from Ulaanbaatar to the start line and from the finish line back to Ulaanbaatar plus many more to facilitate the race logistics.
10. CUSTOM SADDLE
A custom made saddle, specially commissioned and designed for the Derby to be short enough, lightweight enough, stable enough, and tough enough to last 1000km. Its design is perfectly complemented by the saddle bag which each of us will receive.
11. START CAMP
A purpose built private start line camp for pre-race training.
12. FINISH CAMP
A finish line camp to accommodate early finishers and to act as a base for the closing stages of the race plus the awards ceremony.
13. PUBLICITY MACHINE
Our press team back in the UK working to share our story with the world’s media; a daily race report & commentary sent from the field together with images from the official race photographer dispatched daily from the racecourse.
14. LIVE RACE TRACKING
Our own web page to shout about our campaign, sponsors and training before the event as well as a tracking map linked to our satellite tracker so we can be tracked live throughout the race.
15. FOOD & DRINK
Once we leave the city our food and non alcoholic drinks are included until we arrive back in Ulaanbaatar.
16. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
- Accommodation in Ulaanbaatar pre & post the race
It will allow us to compete in an event that gives us an opportunity to not only follow our dreams but is also a spiritual journey. We have the opportunity to proudly represent our country.
To finish is to win!
*Funds raised will be transferred directly to The Adventurists bank account*
