Toni Cycling 2021-2022

Personal message

My name is Toni Mould, 37, and I am a South African paracyclist. I have a disability called Cerebral Palsy caused by complications during the birth process. My CP which affects my balance, speech, and all my motor skills.

Cycling has become a vital aspect of my life, not only giving me a chance to travel and compete at the highest level of the sport, but also to stay healthy and keep my muscles, joints, and organs strong increasing my general health and well-being. I have been part of the South  African Para-cycling team since 2015. I have competed in four World Cups (two in SA, Italy and Belgium) and three World Championships (SA, Italy and the Netherlands). I have several National Championship titles and one World Champs silver medal from 2017.

In 2021 I achieved a lifelong dream of going to the Paralympics (Tokyo 2020). I finished 10th in the Time Trial and 8th in the road race. After seeing me at the Paralympics my coach, Carol Cooke (Tokyo silver medallist and 3 time Paralympian) said I have improved so much in the last two years. But I am not done! I know I can improve further and want to see if I can make it Paris 2024! To do so I want to compete in national and international races in 2022.

Paracyclists in South Africa have to be self-funded due to the lack of funding from the government and a lack of corporate sponsors that invest in SA para-athletes. Funds raised through this campaign will be used for my training and competition expenses both in South Africa and overseas in 2022. Due to my disability, I have to take a friend as an assistant on all my competition trips to help me with daily tasks. These are some of the reasons why it is so expensive for me to compete.

I am very committed to my cycling. In 2021 I started to work part time to help cover my living expenses but due to my disability and my training routine, I cannot work full time and therefore really need the support to make my dream come true. Each and every donation is greatly appreciated whether you contribute to a line item or cover the whole line item. Donations can be once off or a monthly contribution.

My competitions thus far are:

Recommendations:

"Toni was my dark horse during my time as Director, Paracycling South-Africa. Her attitude, hard work and commitment, made her stand on the World podium. Toni is known worldwide for her commitment to Paracycling and her never-give-up attitude. She is respected and loved, by the sport community, World-wide. She deserves your backing. She's got mine. Please help Toni to take that fighting spirit of hers, onto the World platform, where she belongs." - Estelle van der Merwe, ex SA paracyclist and ex director of SA Para-Cycling

"Toni competes in the T1 class which is the smallest and has people with a variety of disabilities in and Toni seems to be the most affected cyclist in the class. However, this has not deterred her from competing. In South Africa, Toni is the only T1 rider in SA and that makes training and competing locally harder as she has no one to train with, exchange notes with or compete against.  In the last two years I have seen her transformed in a true Ambassador for her country, she has also done three personal bests at three different international races during 2018 - 2019. Toni is a motivated, determined, and dedicated woman.  Cycling South Africa is not in the position at present to fund individual athletes or national teams, so each athlete must fund their own training and competitions." – O’Ryan Bruintjies, Current SA Para-Cycling director
