Triphin Mudzvengi

Personal message

My name is Prof Jonathan Jansen, former vice-chancellor of the University of the Free State.  I got in touch with Triphin Mudzvengi after reading her story.  The 18-year-old Triphin Mudzvengi achieved distinctions in seven subjects but her parents are battling to raise her tuition fees to study at the University of the Witwatersrand University.  Triphin wants to study civil engineering at Wits but is faced with 2 hurdles.

The first one being that she does not qualify for NSFAS funding. National Student Financial Aid Scheme. (NSFAS) pays the registration fees for approved students. It’s a great funding initiative but Triphin doesn’t qualify because NSFAS only funds South African citizens.

The second hurdle is that Triphin is a holder of an asylum permit. Had she not been, she would probably approach the Zimbabwean government to ask for funding because the Refugees Amendment Act forbids refugees and asylum seekers to visit, seek aid or communicate with their governments.

In matric, she achieved:

  • 85% in English Home Language,
  • 80% in Afrikaans First Additional Language
  • 86% in Mathematics,
  • 89% in Life Orientation
  • 86% in Computer Application Technique
  • 94% in Life Sciences
  • 88% in Physical Sciences.

Triphin's father is a part-time bricklayer and her mother is a domestic worker.

South Africans have come together to send a Triphin to university.  A R100,000 sponsorship towards her tuition fees for 2020 was offered on Thursday by Mukuru, a fintech company that offers financial services to under-served communities on the continent.  The annual tuition fee at Wits is about R149,000. Though she qualified for an R15,000 bursary as a top performer, Wits required 75% of the fee upfront before she could register.

I am fundraising to help cover any additional costs that Triphin might encounter during the full course of her studies (+4 years) and to pay the remaining tuition costs of her studies.

Triphin has worked hard to achieve outstanding results, with this campaign I hope to ensure that she can prosper without any financial limitations and go on to reach her dreams.
