About me: Tristan Slabbert
I'm a happy busy 6-year-old boy with a few health problems and I now need Intravenous treatments every 6 weeks to aid in strengthening my immunity so I have less recurrent infections and less time in hospital.
I have been diagnosed with IgA Deficiency a primary immunodeficiency characterized by an undetectable level immunoglobulin A (IgA).
So what does this mean? When other kids get the sniffles or a cough, their bodies can fight the infections. Mine can't. My weak point is my chest and so I can go from a cough/sinus infection to pneumonia within 48hours.
My Intravenous infusions contain some IgA which is used to strengthen the body's natural defense system (immune system) This medication is made from healthy human blood that has a high level of certain defensive substances (antibodies), which help fight infections.
Infusions are started slowly while monitoring you closely in a high care ward as there are side effects such as flushing, chills, muscle cramps, back/joint pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, or shortness of breath.
My medical aid does not cover my infusions and so my friends, family, mom, and dad have come up with ways to raise funds for my treatments.
The treatment will aid in less re-occurring infections and Hospitalisation.
