It has been emotional to see the public reawakening their imagination around Lovedale Press- in response to the loss of the Cape Town fire and before then during the 2020 Lockdown. We have seen, at least from Victory of the Words' vantage point, a need to help , a reattachment and a recommitment of some major institutions to Lovedale - this is promising as it gives an indication that with our help , Lovedale Press may survive to see it's 200 year anniversary and its works digitised. It may not be in the current form we find it now but we are confident will continue to exist to 2023 and beyond. This does not by any measure mean that our work is done there are still some ways to go but we have seen positive movement in the direction of progress.

Since our founding in April 2020 and our call for help - we have seen a significant spike in donations hosted on the Back a Buddy platform with the total monies raised now sitting at under R160 500. Included is R30 000 of that fund was donated anonymously by a major art-house and R10500 was given generously by a respected writer who has a personal attachment to Lovedale Press through her engagement with the texts that were produced there. We are as moved by the major contributors as we are by those who have given what they can afford at a time when finances are incredibly challenging for so many- not only has the fundraiser been a wonderful assurance that South Africans are invested in preserving their heritage for future generations, our collective efforts have meant that we have managed to pay out an equal share of the funds pledged and received so far to each of the three custodians.

The Victory of the Word is preparing to move into phase 2 which is applied to have the historical printing presses declared a national Heritage Object - we hope to go on this journey with the support of a major art institution and of course the general public when it comes to galvanizing public participation.

Lastly, Victory of the Word has decided to formalize our partnership by registering the entity as an NPC which will expand its work beyond its efforts to save the press. The mandate we have set ourselves is simple: Victory of the Word is a fundraising and development platform committed to serving independent artists and the preservation of language both visual and written.

Our first project outside of our Lovedale project was the BODYLAND Residency hosted in the Eastern Cape. The University of Fort Hare’s Hunterstoun Centre funded by The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, in association with Victory of the Word, proudly hosted 8 young artists in the idyllic Amathole village of Hogsback, South Africa, from the 24th of October to the 7th of November 2020. The project will include an opportunity for the participants to engage with Lovedale press so you can see how our relationship with the Press continues to evolve. A project such as this serves to bring the work that was done by the pioneers at Lovedale to a multidisciplinary , contemporary and engaging to serve our arts community and we won’t be stopping here.
