The Freedom Challenge (Race Across South Africa) is a 2300km, non-stop, self-supported, extreme mountain bike race that goes from Pietermaritzburg to Paarl in the Western Cape.   No GPS is allowed and riders have to self- navigate using maps and a compass. The race is in June 2017 when it is cold. Competitors have 26 days to complete the race. As yet no woman has ridden the race completely alone without the assistance and companionship of other riders.
This year I aim to race RASA as a solo woman. As such I will be responsible for my own navigation, bike repairs, portages and high fence scaling. I am aiming for 16 days, a challenge that will need 16-18 hours of riding per day and definitely night-time navigation. Every effort will be made to be alone on the trail without the company of other riders, except in the support stations. My progress will be tracked by a compulsory tracking device on the Freedom Challenge website.
I am asking you to sponsor me (any amount) for each day that I race solo, with an added monetary incentive (any amount) to finish in 16 days or less. Please would you email your pledge to Ingrid.Avidon@gmail.com and I will contact you after the race with the amount owed. You can then pay the amount owing into the acount on this site.
Or, you can make a once off donation (using this site), as other sponsors have already done.
All money raised will be donated to sponsor a local, young girl’s schooling (three years) at the Mariazell Mission school located near the Malekhalonyane support station in the Eastern Cape (near Matatiele).
Yours in Adventure, Ingrid

Freedom Challenge Scholarship Fund
Over the last number of years participants in the events arranged by the Freedom Challenge have expressed an interest in giving back something to the people along the route. After much consideration we have decided that a good starting point would be to establish an educational fund to benefit the scholars living along the Mehloding section of the trail. This section falls within the area formerly known as the Transkei and has been identified in various social development studies as one of the poorest parts of the South Africa.
The Fund offers a 3 year scholarships for promising students to attend the private school located at the Mariazell Mission just below the Malekhalonyane Chalets which is one of our support stations used for the Ride Across South Africa and Ride to Rhodes events. http://www.wix.com/allensharp1/fcsf
We are now challenging the 2014 FC participants to let their mountain biking passion benefit the local communities that span the Freedom Trail. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute directly to uplift the knowledge and lives of individuals and communities through education.
The Fund is run under the auspices of The Freedom Challenge’s annual, extreme and unsupported, mountain bike race extending from Pietermaritzburg to Cape Town www.freedomchallenge.org.za This is a project of the Freedom Trail Foundation.
