Personal message

HELP US TO GROW A DIVERSE & SUSTAINABLE TEAM FOR OUR FUTURE RUGBY STARS!

Wanderers Rugby Club was formed in 1886, when young wandering miners gathered in Johannesburg to form what is now the oldest rugby club in Gauteng & the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU). Two years later in 1888 ‘The Wanderers Club’ was established.

In 2018, we re-established the junior rugby section (Young Chiefs) under the initiative of Robert Barnard (our passionate Director of Coaching) & Petra Anderson (a long standing sports mad Wanderers Club member).

Junior rugby at Wanderers caters for boys & girls from age 5 to 18 and has grown rapidly to >135 members, making us the fastest growing, integrated junior rugby club within the GLRU.

In this is included a large number of development players from underprivileged areas, making us one of the most diverse teams in Gauteng. The cost of supporting the development players includes transport to and from school and practice/games, kit, fees, meals and coaching.

We are inspiring & teaching our young Chiefs to have Wanderers P.R.I.D.E: Passion, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, & Excellence, to ensure they mature into great rugby loving citizens & leaders.

In our first year, we achieved the following successes:

  • 3 boys selected for Lions U13s 7s
  • 1 IPT player
  • 5 boys selected for GLRU 7s Ireland tour
  • 2 boys selected for SA teams touring Portugal & Ireland.

Please dig deep and help us to fund transport, coaching, paramedics, kit, equipment and training, so that we can continue to grow & sustain a diverse team of enthusiastic juniors.
