Because we are both passionate about sport and the outdoors, and are a little crazy, we will be participating in the Terra Firma event which consists of a 50km road cycle, followed by a 13km road run, a 25km mountain bike leg and then a 9km beach run. Because we are only a little crazy, we will be doing the event as a team... with Hendrik doing the cycling and Nicky the running!
Most importantly, we are doing this event because we are both passionate about development and giving young people the opportunity to participate in sporting events. The Anna Foundation works with children from farming communities in the Boland area providing them with fantastic academic and sporting support and opportunities. And while I may be biased towards the foundation, I have experienced the impact the 3R’s programme has on the lives of the children.
Thank you for your support and look out for us on race day... you won’t miss us in our bright yellow kit!
The Anna Foundation is all about inspiring young people and providing them with opportunities. The organisation implements afterschool programmes on farms or rural low income schools in the Western Cape, currently in the municipal districts of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Langeberg and the Overberg. The Anna Foundation aims to empower disadvantaged rural children with life skills and core values, building self-worth and self-responsibility. The organisation’s “3Rs programme: Reading, Running, Right-ing” is implemented during after school hours and incorporates education (literacy), sports (running, riding and sports development) and life skills programmes (presented through drama). Women and men from farming communities are trained by the Anna Foundation to run their 3R’s programme, and teenager and parent workshops are also provided.
