My mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 5 years ago, she had optical neuritis in her one eye and suffered a stroke. Due to her condition she is unemployed and lives with me (her daughter) and grandson. My son has Autism Spectrum Disorder, he is 5, and requires special education which includes additional medical expenses. We do not have a medical aid and this is a one income household. After a recent visit to optometrist for new glasses for mom, they advised she needs to see an opthalmologist. She has only 50% eye sight in her one eye and fast detiorating. The cost of opthalmologist and any additional tests is too much and the optometrist fears that going the government hospital route will take too long. Approximate waiting for an appointment is 2+ years away, by then she will be blind. She is still in her 50's nowhere near retirement. I want her to be able to see my son grow up. It is only the 3 of us. I am reaching out so she can at least see the sun set on a farm somewhere before she leaves this world. She needs these tests so hopefully she can receive better spectacles and have her vision for longer. I don't know how much it will be, but for now, the tests is a step in right direction. The MS is a big concern. For now, baby steps in trying to make her more comfortable and less stressed.
