Eastern Cape Words Open Worlds CampaignI am Alicetine Fredericks, an educator at Kroneberg Primary school. We largely cater to the underprivileged community of the Bethelsdorp extensions 21, 31, 32, Timothy Valley, Jacksonville and Booysens Park.
Ethan George, Merneshley Kock, Tameez Gallant, Kelly Uithaler and Erin Van Voor is 5 of our learners who I've worked with since Term 1 this year preparing them for the Sanlam WOW SPELFEES.
They have competed in 3 competitions thus far with the National competition in Stellenbosch, Cape Town being the final round of 2023. The aim of this initiative is to shift the perspectives of the community by use of words, and we have adopted this at our school. Most of our learners have not traveled to their local mall or beach before and this really opens their worlds to what education can do.
The EC Department of Education has sponsored a bus to transport the 36 learners traveling to the National competition, but their accommodation and food is to own account. The families of our learners are not able to provide them with this money.
Due to living far, we have to travel the 5th of October already so learners are not tired from the road on the day of the competition and will return the day after on 8 October.
Each learner is responsible for R1 500 for the trip. Our accommodation will be at Stumble Inn in Stellenbosch, R380 pppn incl breakfast which amounts to R1 140pp, R360 will be used for lunch and supper over the course of the trip.
This opportunity will greatly impact our learners and encourage them to work even harder for the coming years. They will be traveling and for some for the first time in their lives. They get to visit Cape Town, visit and experience the University of Stellenbosch and maybe study there one day.
All donations will go directly to the Eastern Cape Spelling Club account, which is the organisation that does all the bookings and purchases for all persons embarking on the trip.
