Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth
The Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth (AWS PE) was established in 1971 and is an open shelter which provides assistance to the many vulnerable animals living in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.
AWS PE receives no national government funding and only exists with the support of public donations.
At any given time, our shelter works with and cares for over 150 animals. During our busiest times this figure may double or even triple!
We run a 24-hour service to deal with the many cases of cruelty, neglect and abuse which are reported to us.
The basic needs of food, water, shelter and blankets are provided for our temporary resident shelter cats and dogs. These are not just necessities, but are a source of reassurance and comfort to frightened animals finding themselves at the shelter.
The shelter animals undergo basic socialisation training and the dogs are exercised on a daily basis with the help of wonderful and dedicated volunteers. Our dogs benefit immensely from a weekly beach outing with volunteers, providing a temporary escape from shelter life.
We are priviledged to have our own Veterinary Clinic and full-time Veterinarian. Our Veterinary Clinic provides veterinary care for our animal shelter residents as well as for the disadvantaged in the community. We also run a bi-weekly Community Outreach Programme in the Walmer Township. Our services includes sterilisation, vaccination, dipping and emergency veterinary and basic surgery services. Animals that are vaccinated and sterilised help ensure that less diseases are spread and that unwanted puppies and kittens are prevented.
We re-home healthy, vaccinated and sterilised cats and dogs in our care through adoptions and reunite stray animals with their owners. Our adoption process includes a Home Inspection by our Inspectors and we require that all existing household pets are sterilised (in accordance with our Municipal By-laws).
Each and every kitten, cat, puppy and dog entering our shelter by whatever means undergoes a health check by our medical team to determine the condition of and the level of care that is required for the welfare of that animal.
Our Veterinarian provides a pet microchipping service for a minimal fee to members of the public in an effort to curb the high volume of pets ending up on the streets or unclaimed at shelters.
We provide education to the local community and schools, focusing particularly on our youth, to promote responsible pet ownership and drive home the importance of vaccination and sterilisation.
We visit the elderly and allow them and our homeless dogs the opportunity to share special moments together.
We provide a much needed facility in terms of an animal crematorium which is a direct benefit to the Nelson Mandela Bay region in terms of reducing landfill costs. We are the only registered animal-only crematorium in Port Elizabeth.
WE CARE AND DO ALL THAT WE CAN TO ENSURE THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF ALL ANIMALS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
We believe in second chances!
