Rebuilding Hope in Honour of the Late Hannah Zoe Grace Chetty, age 7

What was supposed to be a joyful celebration of Hannah Zoe Grace's seventh birthday, turned into an unimaginable nightmare for the Chetty Family culminating in unimaginable loss and tragedy.

Unable to afford a birthday party, Hannah’s wished to visit the Durban View Park and beach in Umhlanga. As little Hannah played in the sand on the shoreline alongside her brother, sister,  and mother when a freak wave crashed upon them. Ruben (45), driven by a desperate father's love, struggled but managed to pull his wife, son Benjamin (12) and eldest daughter Tehila (14) out the rough waters.

Unable to hold onto his youngest daughter, Hannah slipped away into the current. Courageous bystanders plunged into the rough waters while Hannah fought bravely against the fierce current, battling to reach the safety of the shore. Tragically, she succumbed.

The family's waited for more than six hours in the dark and cold for the coroner to arrive. Shivering and covered in sand, Tehila and her brother Ben were eventually taken to a nearby bystanders’ apartment, for a warm shower and given dry clothes.

In an attempt to provide solace they were asked if they would like to watch TV. Ben innocently replied that they didn't watch TV because they had not had electricity at home for months.

The Chetty family's journey has been one of misfortune, beginning with Ruben's retrenchment four years ago. They have found themselves trapped in an unforgiving cycle of dire financial circumstances, living without even the basic necessities, including electricity, for the past nine months.

This family is one of humility, faith, and resilience. Wendy, a teacher by profession, now educates their children at home, unable to secure employment. Ruben, a dynamic and hardworking individual, has faced one unfortunate setback after another.

We implore you to lift the Chetty family from the depths of despair with funds to provide immediate relief, offering basic essentials for their daily lives, food, and an opportunity to restore the dignity and comfort they so deserve.

If you are unable to contribute financially, we implore you to spread the word or consider providing Ruben or Wendy with employment. Together, we can inspire a wave of compassion and support that will carry the Chetty family forward on their path to healing with the light of little Hannah is shining on them always.

This is devastating. The same thing happened to my son when he was 3 years old and we were so blessed that we managed to get him out the sea. Sending strength to this family.
