HARVEST YOUTH PROJECT
The HARVEST CENTRE dream was born over a decade ago from a wish to make a difference to people's lives in Hout Bay.
The current property was then found and bought with private funds to build a creative hub for Hout Bay that serves both as a job creation and skills training opportunity and as a springboard for small SME's through the creation of a major tourist drawcard.
The Harvest Centre was then renovated by Helena as "owner builder" using local labour and skills. It now houses around 25 craft and light industrial workshops as well as the Bay Harbour Market superbly run by Anthony Strubel and his team, and has thereby created an immense turnaround to the area with over 200 new job opportunities.
One is however always left with a feeling that more can be done and we saw a crying need for mentorship and affordable opportunities for underprivileged youth in Hout Bay - and so the Harvest Youth Project was initiated.
Our Aims:1. To offer exciting fun-filled activities as healthy alternative choices to the negative influences that our youth are exposed to in their communities on a daily basis. 2. To create a safe place where all feel welcome, respected and encouraged to make positive changes in their own and each other’s lives. 3. To provide quality skills training in various arts forms including IT and other employable skills where life skills and basic business understanding and career planning will form an integral part. 4. To identify new talent and guide individuals towards creating a future for themselves. 5. To provide nourishment to youth who come from homes where there is often no food in the house.
