Health is Wealth Athletics Club
2018 is a historic year in South Africa and globally as it marks the 100 years of Madiba. Health is Wealth Athletics Club pioneered the 100 Km by 100 Runners for Mandela 100 concept as a celebratory heritage run which seeks to honour this global icon through running. As the theme says, this social run is aligned to the centenary hence the 100 km by 100 runners.
Also in line with Madiba’s principle of fairness and equitable distribution , the select runners are drawn from various South African provinces and cuts across the racial and gender bars. As a man who endured the utmost emotional torment, the 100 patriotic and selfless runners will endure the 100 km endurance run on a dusty rural terrain in honour of Madiba.
The route traces the historic landmarks in the life and times of Madiba , the institutions and places which shaped his leadership skills in his formative years. Starting at Clarkebury S.S.S, a high school he attended. At 50 km the 100 runners will be at the main water station at Mqhekezweni Great Place, the home where he was raised by his guardian AbaThembu regent King Jongintaba Dalindyebo. At 74 km the runners will be running past his Qunu village home where he is laid to rest. At 100 km the runners will be at Mvezo, the village where he was born.
We cannot complete the run without doing good. Jongintaba Senior Secondary School in Mqhekezweni village (named after regent King Jongintaba Dalindyebo, Madiba's childhood guardian) and Clarkebury Senior Secondary School in Clarkebury village (the start of the 100 km) need major renovations.
We are appealing to the community to pledge R1 per km to be completed on 15 July to raise enough funds to buy school shoes for 100 village scholars. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela
