Journey to Master Spelling Bee Campaign

Akaziwe Mdakane, fondly known as Zizi, is a Grade 7 student at Zuza Primary School in Madadeni, Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. She is my dear niece. She is an extraordinary speller who clinched victory in the 2023 school spelling competition. Her dream? Qualifying and triumphing at the prestigious Master Spelling Bee.

She has suffered two tragedies this year, on the 1st February 2023, her beloved Grandmother passed away. On the 30th May 2023, tragedy struck again, as a house fire engulfed their home and reduced it to ashes. She, along with four family members, miraculously escaped through the windows. They were however left with only the clothes on their backs. As she was the last to flee, she suffered excessive smoke inhalation, and as a result spent time in ICU.
