As a Non Profit Organisation (NPO. No. 103-207) that is also a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO no. 930035266), JB Marks Education Trust Fund conducts various community outreach initiatives for the benefit of the South African Community. The Alumni of the Trust also have initiatives that are beneficial to the public.

The JB Marks Alumni has partnered with Lasec (Pty) Ltd to provide under privileged primary schools with mobile science units which will positively impact grade 4-7 learners. We have adopted Mbabalana Primary School in Port St John in the Eastern Cape. The mobile science units seek to mitigate the problem of the school not having a classroom that can be used as a science lab.

The mobile science unit can be placed at any section of the school’s existing classrooms. The Science unit comes equipped with a gas cylinder for firing the Bunsen banner attached on top, a sink and two 15-liter containers for fresh and used water.  This makes the lab usable in a school that does not have running water or a well-equipped laboratory. Lasec will provide training to the teachers on the proper and better use of the equipment to ensure that every learner has an opportunity to practically learn more about science.

It is worth mentioning that the units are secure and durable and are very user friendly to both teachers and learners. To complete the set for effectiveness, Mathematics and Science display charts are also included as visual aids during the lessons.

In addition, the mobile units can also be of benefit to other schools around the community as they can be easily loaded into a bakkie and transported to another school. Our partners Lasec, have done a needs assessment of the school and will continue to do so for the duration of four years from Grade 4-7.  These needs are in line with the Primary School Curriculum as per the Department of Basic Education.
