Thobela Maqungo: “I have survived but will have no place to stay after I recover from these burn wounds and get discharged from the hospital.” Maqungo lives on a disability grant and walks with the aid of crutches following a car accident a few years ago.
“He doesn’t have money to rebuild the house, so we would be grateful if the City of Cape Town could help" or anyone with the ability to assist rebuild his family home.
Khayelitsha Community Trust (KCT)
On Mandela Day 18 July 2019 went to site to launch a fundraising campaign to coordinate private sector to get together to assist rebuild the dignity of the Myathaza family. On the day the Trust assisted by the leadership structures of the community as well as community members gathered in Town Two to clean up the site and secure the building:
- KCT coordinated that the roofing structure be re-installed
- The windows are sealed
- And a Fence to be built
In order to safeguard the home as the abandoned site was attracting criminal activities.
The trust is setting a target date of 3 months to coordinate funding, which will in turn restore the dignity of the Myathaza family.
