KZN Science Centre (KZNSC) is a registered non-profit (062-185-NPO) and public benefits organisation (930030175) that was developed as an edutainment for everyone whether young or old. The KZN Science Centre opened its doors officially in June 2002. At the time the science centre was created as a retail add-on to customers visiting The Gateway Theatre of Shopping Mall, KwaZulu-Natal in the first eight years of operation, the science centre was called The Old Mutual-MTN Science Centre, due to the affiliation to Old Mutual Property Investment Group being the owner of the shopping mall.

In 2009 due to a shift in the focus of Old Mutual, the science centre worked toward becoming a self-sufficient non-profit organization. It was also in these years that Old Mutual withdrew as a sponsor and charged rental on the space provided to the science centre. When the lease agreement ended in 2014. Old Mutual secured a major retailer to occupy the space once provided to the science centre.

At this time, The KZN Science Centre had undertaken the relocation process and has been given the opportunity to be housed at a building located at Durban CBD The new location of the Centre sits in the middle of eThekwini municipality, and close to the largest townships and school districts in the province.
