Burger Family Fire Campaign
My name is Marisa Ievers. My niece, Nina-Moon Burger and her husband Rian Burger are farmers in Danielskuil in the Northern Cape. Their farm, Kramersfontein, has been in Rian's family for several years and the farm house was built by his late father, Dries Burger.From Wednesday, 20 September 2023, veld fires broke out in the area between Danielskuil and Kuruman destroying thousands of hectares in the area, claimed livestock and leaving farms in ruins. Rian and other farmers were busy fire fighting assisting all farms in the area trying to contain the fire. By Friday night, the fire had reached Kramersfontein and they were trying to move the cattle away from it. They believed that the fire was contained at around 23h00 and Rian went to help neighbouring farmers with fire fighting on their lands throughout the night.
Saturday morning, Nina and their two children, Caleb (10) and Joshua (9), drove to the Weideman
family's farm Dunrovin, about 7 km from them. They received the call late in the morning that there was smoke again on
Kramersfontein and she left their sons with Susan and hurried to the farm.
By the time she arrived, the flames were close to the house and very quickly with the gale force winds, the roof caught fire and swept through the house.
The family lost about 1000 ha of their 1400 ha farm, one dog and four cats, but luckily no
cattle. The house was gutted - they lost everything except the clothes on their backs.
They need to start from scratch with everything from clothes to school bags, school books, stationery, kitchen utensils and all basic homeware. Your kind contribution, no matter how small, will assist them to rebuild their home and lives. These funds will ensure that they can at least function as a family until their home is rebuilt.
