Masks for Medics
Over the past 12 months, Masks for Medics have focused on Healthcare workers outside of the hospital environment- fundraising to procure medical-grade PPE and essential equipment to reduce the impending demands on hospitals. These included care workers, palliative-care nurses, emergency responders, family doctors, physiotherapists, and wound sisters. Over this time our beneficiaries have evolved to include not only these many Individuals who work throughout Cape Town, but also Elderly Care Homes throughout the Western Cape, Feeding Schemes, Early Childhood development centres and Shelters in Khayelitsha, Gugulethu and Philippi.
Our objectives have included and remain: -
- provide critical PPE which includes gowns, masks, visors, gloves and sanitisers and necessary essential medical equipment such as monitors (pulse oximeters) and thermometers to health care workers, Doctors, Nurses, Palliative Care practitioners, emergency response personnel and Carers to the elderly;
- Training of health care workers to use their PPE and the medical equipment correctly & safely;
- To enable Covid19 patients to be treated in their own homes and thus avoid overburdening the hospitals.
Despite the trial vaccine which has been prioritised for front line healthcare workers, the need for a coordinated strategic disaster management organisation is more critical now than ever before. especially due to the gross inequalities of the South African socio-economic terrain, with many communities experiencing limited resources, overcrowded living conditions and profound vulnerability. Your support to reach our fundraising goal of R1 000 000 will ensure we are able to fulfil these urgent needs.
The second wave experienced in December 2020 and January 2021 proved exceptionally harrowing and by all accounts we the imminent third wave is approaching The Western Cape and we need your assistance to broaden our beneficiary base to include additional feeding schemes and homeless shelters ensuring that all those who work tirelessly in challenging communities are safe.
Your support to reach our fundraising goal of R1 000 000 will ensure we are able to fulfil these urgent needs.
With our deep appreciation from The Masks for Medics team and our beneficiaries.
May you all stay safe and healthy
