Aweh! Politically Aweh is a new, youth-run online media platform that aims to bring important news, politics and cultural topics to the attention of young South Africans through accessible, engaging short videos. Our content is fast-paced, tightly packaged and humorous, with pop culture references and memes woven throughout. We pride ourselves in our high quality research, writing and production values.
We realised that the popular Vox News 'explainer format in the US could be combined with comedy, sketches and meme culture (think The Daily Show with Trevor Noah) to deliver key stories in an ‘infotainment’ format. To date we have produced eight episodes, funded by a grant from the National Film and Video Foundation, which have accumulated over 300,000 views across our social media channels. We tackle diverse subjects including threats to democracy, gender based violence, LGBTQ+ rights, Eskom and the 2019 elections. Our innovative entertainment-meets-journalism approach caught the interest of Daily Maverick, which partnered with us for publication to its 1 1 million monthly readers.
We are a small dynamic young team of media professionals, presenters, writers and researchers hoping to to disrupt the way South Africans consume news. Now more than ever, we need to tackle misinformation and fake news to grow an informed electorate that will demand accountability from our political leaders, whether about corruption, climate justice, service delivery or inequality. Join us on our quest today! Aweh Mzansi!
