Pretoria West Early Childhood Development Centre
PRETORIA WEST EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE is a community based, non-funded ECD centre; a registered NPO, catering for the very poor neighbourhoods around the Pretoria West area. The area is a semi-industrial area; with most parents working in the surrounding panel beating entities and other related industries. Most are in the lower LSM categories; with some households having 1 or both parents unemployed.
The centre was started in 2016 by Mr Thamsanqa Ncube, who began the centre from an old building in Church Street in the area, having discovered that a lot of kids were roaming about in the street, with nothing to do. In 2017, the ECD was evicted from the premises due to the high rentals being demanded.
Not one to give up, and confronted by the severe continuing need for a place for the children in the area to receive some sort of learning and daily routine, Mr Ncube sought and secured an empty stand/plot, which used to be a panel beaters’ garage/yard; and with log cabins, created one of the best ECD centres in the area; complete with a kitchen; separate boys and girls toilets as well as an office and classrooms.
The Centre has now grown, and Mr Ncube has now made an application to expand the centre, and start a formal low-cost primary school, in order to continue to support the children in the area, most of whom are unable to secure places in the surrounding state schools.
The Centre has now submitted to the Department of Education, and has been accepted as a potential low cost, private education institution, subject to an inspection and validation of a proposed site in the area. The proposed site is a former business college, and apart from needing some paintwork and small renovation, can be turned into a fuunctional school, starting with Grade R to Grade 3 in 2020, and adding up the numbers with a grade each consequent year.
It is for this purpose that we require the assistance and genorousity of all of you - we would like to; 1) pay the rental deposit for the proposed premises; 2) do the minimum renovations (mostly paintwork and genral claening) for the new site, 3) buy furniture for the classroms (starting with 5 classrooms 4) buy office furniture for the reception and offices 5) Buy some playground equipment to install on the grounds ofr the kids 6) Buy some learning material and educational toys for the kids to start of with.
