The QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) is considered the leading agency representing persons with spinal cord injury and physical disability in South Africa. QASA (est 1978) is a NPO of quadriplegics and paraplegics with the vision that all quadriplegics and paraplegics will live their lives to their full potential. QASA strives to develop products, projects and services as well as lobbying, advocacy and prevention programs to develop capacity amongst its members to offer opportunities for workplace and societal integration.

Our programmes/projects/services:

  1. Early Intervention & Prevention - ‘Buckle-up’ & ‘Distracted Driving’ campaigns > national campaigns during the holiday season to reduce the incidence of spinal cord injury
  2. Skills development & Employment Project
  • Work Readiness Programme > to prepare young persons with physical disability for gainful employment (modules are aligned to SAQA Unit Standards)
  • Driver Training Programme (the only full-scale driver training programme in South Africa for persons with mobility impairments) > to assist persons with physical disability obtain a Driver’s License
  • Employment Placement > QASA has a 74% success rate in placing our learners in full-time employment
  1. Lobbying & advocacy - disability awareness publications, workshops, campaigns & training; 'Know your rights' publications & campaigns; engagement with public & private sector > national campaigns to advocate for the full integration of persons with physical disability into society and the workplace
  2. Self-help centres - 14 centres throughout South Africa > to promote independent living for persons with physical disability
  3. Research > to ensure that QASA provides up-to-date information/material for publications
  4. Education Fund
  • Learners: many of our young service-users have not completed their secondary school education primarily due to inadequate accessible transport for wheelchair users > the Fund provides financial assistance in order for them to complete Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Students: the Fund assist students obtain a qualification in the field of their choice
  1. Sports Fund > the Fund provides financial assistance for any sporting activity
  2. Provision of assistive devices > assisting service-users acquire equipment/tools to ensure that they are as mobile and functional as possible
  3. Rural Development > assistance to wheelchair users in rural communities to make their homes wheelchair accessible (entrances, bathrooms/showers, etc)
