Life Community Services
Broken homes, lack of access to quality education, high youth unemployment; these are just some of the challenges facing children and young people growing-up in South Africa’s impoverished communities.
In George, LIFE Community Services is a Christian NPO tackling these crises head-on through innovative, community-based programmes. Its motto is ‘Touch a Life and Mend a Heart. This is the organisation that Des and Glen have chosen to benefit from their fundraising expedition Row4Life
The duo is aiming to raise in excess of R1,260,000 for LIFE. This will be enough to cover one year’s worth of school-fees for 300 children and it need not stop there. Education is key to ensuring the next generation can access opportunities that will enable them to move beyond their current circumstances.

The Row4LIFE team will be navigating a fearsome stretch of ocean, as they participate in the 2018 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Recognized as one of world’s toughest sporting events, the annual Challenge sees solo racers and teams rowing unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean from San Sebastian in the Canary Islands to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbour, Antigua.
The idea for the race came to Sir Chay Blyth whilst he was rowing the Atlantic Ocean in 1966 with John Ridgeway. It was a 92-day battle against hurricanes, 50-foot waves and near starvation.
Des and Glen will be pushed to the limit physically, mentally and emotionally, as they attempt to enter the history books and beat the current pairs record of 37 days.
To date, more people have climbed Everest and been into space than have successfully rowed across the Atlantic Ocean.
