The Ububele Educational & Psychotherapy Trust

Founded by clinical psychologists Tony and Hillary Hamburger, Ububele is a centre of learning with a focus on improving the emotional development and wellbeing of children under 7, their parents and other caregivers. For the last 14 years, its work has centred on the promotion of mental health and the development, field testing and advocating of low-cost models of preventative care and experiential training, which are suitable for low-resource environments. Located in Kew, our programmes are mainly conducted in nearby Alexandra (a Johannesburg Township where multiple risk factors for poor infant development collide - including poverty, violence, and social dislocation). Ububele, which means kindness, embodies the notion of public interest psychology.

The vision of Ububele, which was established in 2000, is framed by a human rights approach to mental health, particularly the rights of children to special protection, and to be given opportunities and facilities, by law and by other means, to enable [them] to develop physically, mentally, morally, spiritually and socially in a healthy and normal manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity. In the enactment of laws for this purpose, the best interests of the child shall be the paramount consideration. (United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1386 (XIV), 10 December 1959).

Ububele’s vision for South Africa is that of a nurturing society with secure, well-cared for children, who grow up to be emotionally healthy adults, competent parents, and good citizens.

Ububele’s mission is to have a positive impact on the mental health of disadvantaged South Africans through the development, implementation, and dissemination of interventions and training programmes which focus on early childhood and experiential group work.

Ububele’s objectives are to:

  • Develop models of community-based psychological care and support for children
  • Develop, run and disseminate training programmes
  • Conduct research into our interventions
  • Advocate for the right to child mental health care
