Umthunzi Farming Community

Umthunzi Farming Community was established in March 2018 in response to poor access to ethical, sustainable markets for small-scale urban farmers and the limited awareness of consumers about our local food systems in Cape Town.

‘Umthunzi’ means ‘shade’ in IsiXhosa, symbolising the support Umthunzi aims to provide to the soil, the plants, the farmers and our Cape Town community. Our mission is to support urban farmers to grow, sell and eat high quality, nourishing, seasonal, organic vegetables.

Through this support we aim to consciously link together all role players along the supply chain, from seed to consumer. Our vision is to provide a platform for a more sustainable, ethical and transparent local food system, thereby increasing access to nourishing produce.

Because I can’t order my usual veg bag this week. Sustainable small-scale businesses require customer loyalty.
