United World Colleges Scholarship Trust of South Africa
The United World College Trust of South Africa was formed in 1979 with the aim of funding talented South African students to attend one of the United World Colleges around the world. In 1979, the first scholarships were awarded to three students who attended Atlantic College in Wales. Since then, over 200 South African students have received scholarships to attend one of the 15 UWCs around the world.
The UWC Trust of South Africa is registered as a Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation and is responsible for identifying and selecting students through a rigorous process. Comprised of UWC alumni, prominent educationalists and philanthropists, the trust also takes care of the administrative, outreach, and fundraising activities. The trust appoints an Executive Committee of ex-UWC students and supporters to run the day-to-day affairs of trust as well as to set up appropriate regional committee structures to identify and support students in applying for scholarships.
We believe in providing opportunities to the most talented, deserving, and needy students. We assess students not based on the opportunities they have received but to what extent they have made the most of those opportunities that are available to them.
