Pietermaritzburg Young Men's Christian Association
YMCA Pietermaritzburg is a registered non-profit organisation, serving the Pietermaritzburg youth community since 1875.
Globally, YMCA is renowned for its accommodation facilities and no different with YMCA Pietermaritzburg. The local association is largely recognized as a landmark facility in the Pietermaritzburg community. Our 62-bedroomed hostel is well-known as a student residence and our 1200m² Indoor Sports Centre is frequented by sports enthusiasts and is renowned as a venue for special events. The chapel on-site is also utilised by two different churches at different times of the week. While the facility is an asset, this is certainly peripheral to the overall mission of the organisation – Empowering Young People for Life Leadership and Service.
The YMCA is for Youth Development.
Youth development is the social-emotional, cognitive, and physical processes that all teens uniquely experience. At the YMCA, we know that a successful development process fulfils youths’ innate need to be loved, spiritually grounded, educated, competent, and healthy. The YMCA provides a safe space for young people to develop friendships, have new experiences and grow in leadership.
Through a range of youth development programmes, the YMCA Pietermaritzburg remains a progressive movement. While the giant lay in wait in recent years, mid-2014 witnessed an explosive surge in youth programmes when the organisation appointed a new CEO. The approach and primary focus was to grow youth programmes and community engagement in order to strengthen the organisation’s mission. Key programmes reach children and youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, including those in school (Y-Zone) as well as children and youth living on the streets (Y-Justice) and orphaned and vulnerable children based in local children’s homes. Daily programmatic interventions as well as seasonal day camps form the basis of the youth development methodology.
